Blue eyes

Description

This is a Rhea from the Utica Zoo NY, I really like this one as she has really pretty blue eyes. The others all seem to have gray, tan or brown eyes. She was laying down like I have never seen them do before and was close to the fence shot I was able to get a good close up of her. I took pictures of her and one of the other ones that was laying there when these kids came running up and scared them. They jumped up and ran away. I think the were laying there trying to keep warm as it was only about 34 degrees out. Taken 2-24-12

This is a really touching image. I absolutely love birds and you're very lucky to be able to get this close to photograph them, without fences blocking the shot.

There are a few suggestions I could make that I think would really give this photograph more impact:

Compositionally, I think it's pretty good. I really love that it's right up in this birds face. The level of detail in the eyelashes, feathers, and even the texture within the iris are all amazing. I think if you tried a different crop, it would make it perfect. There's a little too much space above the eye, showing the head and background that don't bring as much visual interest to the shot.

Also, I think the lighting is a little flat and it's making the colors look dull. You're right that her blue eye is beautiful. Changing the levels, curves, color balance, saturation, etc. would really help to bring that blue tone out and make the color 'pop.' You could very easily bring more dimension to this shot by giving it a higher contrast and more saturation - deepening the shadows and making the colors bolder.

Having said that, it really is an amazing shot. The bird's expression is so emotional and I've found that to be a rare quality in bird photography. Definitely keep photographing birds; I can tell you really have the eye for it.
